A Monument for the Ocean: French Polynesia Creates the World’s Largest Marine Protected Area
In a world where headlines about the ocean often center around plastic, bleaching, or extinction, we finally have a reason to celebrate: French Polynesia has just proposed the world’s largest Marine Protected Area (MPA)—a groundbreaking conservation plan covering its entire Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), or 4.8 million square kilometers (1.9 million square miles) of Pacific Ocean.
For Immoral Coral, this is more than good news. It’s a bold reminder of what’s possible when communities, culture, and conservation unite.
What Is a Marine Protected Area (MPA)?
A Marine Protected Area is like a national park—but underwater. It’s a space where ecosystems are allowed to thrive free from human harm, such as overfishing, oil drilling, or deep-sea mining.
MPAs are one of the most effective tools we have to fight back against biodiversity loss and climate breakdown. When marine areas are protected, fish populations rebound, coral reefs recover, and ecosystems stabilize.
Why This One Matters
This new proposal, announced by French Polynesian President Moetai Brotherson at the United Nations Ocean Conference, would protect all 4.8 million square kilometers of French Polynesia’s waters—an area larger than the European Union.
“We have been managing this EEZ wisely for centuries, using the techniques that were passed on from the generations before us and our ancestors,”

But this isn’t just a symbolic move. The protection plan is layered and strategic:
🪸 Coral Reefs That Breathe Life Into the Pacific
This region includes vibrant coral ecosystems near the Society and Gambier Islands—areas that would become fully protected under the proposal:
-
220,000 km² near the Society Islands
-
680,000 km² near the Gambier Islands
These reefs are more than beautiful—they're crucial for biodiversity, coastal protection, and carbon regulation.
🌊 Deep-Sea Ecosystems Still Largely Unexplored
Vast seamounts, hydrothermal vents, and deep trenches lie hidden beneath the surface. These fragile habitats face growing threats from extractive industries—but under the proposed MPA, practices like deep-sea mining and bottom-trawlingwill be restricted or banned entirely.
🐋 Critical Migration Routes for Marine Giants
These waters are highways for humpbacks, dolphins, green sea turtles, sharks, and tuna—species that migrate thousands of miles to breed, nest, or hunt in French Polynesian waters. Protecting these corridors means supporting global biodiversity, not just local.
🧭 Ancestral Stewardship in the Modern Age
This proposal doesn't only prioritize ecology—it honors cultural heritage. With over 186,000 km² set aside for artisanal fishing only, it protects traditional Ma’ohi line-fishing practices while preventing industrial overreach.
It’s conservation through Indigenous leadership, built on generations of wisdom and respect for the ocean.
❌ Bans on Industrial Exploitation
Unlike many “paper parks,” this proposal has real substance:
-
900,000 km² will be completely off-limits to extraction
-
An additional 500,000 km² will become highly protected by World Ocean Day 2026
-
Industrial fishing, mining, and large-scale commercial operations will be banned or tightly regulated
-
Only low-impact, cultural fishing practices will remain in designated zones
This isn't just big—it’s smart, layered, and enforceable.
Why It Connects to You
You may not live near French Polynesia. You may not sail its waters.
But you share its heartbeat.
You believe in protecting the ocean. You believe in spreading awareness.
You believe in taking small actions that ripple out into big change.
That’s what Immoral Coral was built on—shared values. When you wear one of our shirts, you're not just putting on something soft, sustainable, and stylish.
You're wearing your conviction. Your protest sign.
Your spark to ignite a conversation.
Made from 50% recycled plastic bottles, 25% organic cotton, and 25% sustainably farmed modal, our shirts are a conscious choice that invites others to ask questions and lean in closer.
Because saving the ocean doesn’t always start with a megaphone.
Sometimes it starts with a shirt.
Let’s Celebrate—and Keep Fighting
This MPA proposal is a win. But it’s also a call to action.
Less than 8% of the ocean is currently protected. To safeguard biodiversity and fight climate change, the world needs to reach 30% protection by 2030. We’re not there yet—but with every act of conscious consumerism, we get closer.
We’re proud to have you here with us.
Thank you for being a part of a movement that doesn’t just speak for the reef—it fights for it.
🌊 Shoutout to All the Fin-tastic Dads
Before you go...
Happy Father’s Day to all the oceanside legends, tide-turners, and reef defenders out there. Whether your dad taught you how to cast a fishing line or simply showed you what it means to care deeply for the world around you—today, we shell-ebrate him.
And a special shoutout to my dad—the BEST DAD of all time—thank you for being my anchor and my biggest supporter. You’re truly the catch of the day!
Here’s to all the amazing dads making waves every day! 🌊🐟
Wear the truth. Restore the ocean.
