Meet the Carnarvon Flapjack: A New Deep Sea Discovery
In May 2025, marine biologists officially described a fascinating new species of umbrella octopus, Opisthoteuthis carnarvonensis, commonly referred to as the Carnarvon flapjack octopus. This peculiar deep sea creature was first collected during a 2022 research expedition off the northwestern coast of Australia, but it wasn’t until recently that scientists finished their analysis and recognized it as a distinct species. Named after the nearby town of Carnarvon, this octopus lives in deep canyons far below the ocean’s surface—an environment that remains largely unexplored.
The Carnarvon flapjack octopus gets its nickname from its unusual appearance. With its rounded body, flattened shape, and large, forward-facing eyes, it almost looks like a living cartoon character—similar to the more famous “Dumbo” octopus. Its skin has a gelatinous texture and a reddish hue, and when it spreads its webbed arms, it forms a parachute-like shape, helping it glide slowly through the water. These adaptations are thought to be energy-efficient ways to move through the deep sea, where food is scarce and pressure is immense.
This discovery is a reminder of how little we still know about the deep ocean. Even in 2025, entire species are being identified for the first time—some of which, like Opisthoteuthis carnarvonensis, had never even been seen before by human eyes. As researchers continue to explore remote areas with better submersibles and underwater tech, they’re not just finding new creatures—they’re rewriting our understanding of ocean life.
The Carnarvon flapjack octopus is just one of what may be hundreds of new species waiting to be named beneath the waves.
