Oscars: Not Quite A Grouch
If you want a fish with personality, look no further than the Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus). Hailing from South America, these intelligent cichlids are famous for their bold colors, interactive behavior, and dog like curiosity, even recognizing their owners!
Some fun facts of our aquatic amigos!
⁃ Some Oscars can grow up to and over a foot long!
⁃ They can live upwards of 15 years in captivity.
⁃ And they love rearranging their habitat, be it in the wild or as a fishy friend at home!
Oscars are smart, messy, and a bit territorial, so they’re best suited for experienced aquarists with plenty of space and strong filtration. They eat a varied diet of pellets, frozen foods, and the occasional treat like shrimp, or even smaller tank mates, as we here at Immoral Coral have found out the hard way in the past!
If you’re ready for a fish that will follow you around the room and beg for food, the Oscar might just be your perfect underwater companion.
