Sharkious Immortalious: The Greenland Legend
Deep in the icy, shadowy waters of the North Atlantic swims a creature older than Shakespeare, the United States, and even the invention of the telescope. The Greenland shark holds the record for the longest living vertebrate ever discovered. With scientists estimating one of these ancient predators may be over 500 years old!
With a slow motion lifestyle growing less than a centimeter per year and cruising at a sluggish pace, Greenland sharks are the mysterious elders of the sea. They dwell at depths few dare to explore and are rarely seen by humans. Their longevity is thought to be due to their cold habitat, low metabolism, and a life devoid of trans fats and reality TV.
But even these wise old wanderers aren’t safe from modern threats. Pollution, climate change, overfishing, and all that pesky deep sea drilling put pressure on their icy domains.
